It comprises a network of glacial inlets that converge on a central fjord named Duskfjord, with several smaller branches extending inland. The name evokes the distinctive light conditions described by visitors, particularly during late summer twilights over the water.

The fjord walls rise steeply from the water, featuring high cliffs of rock, forested slopes, and pockets of alpine terrain. Depths vary widely, with the main inlet reaching several hundred meters below sea level in places and narrow branches forming deep coves.

Marine and freshwater processes mix within the system, producing stratified layers in summer and seasonal currents that bring nutrients to surface habitats. The climate is cool and moist, with frequent rain and relatively mild winters for a high-latitude coast.

The region was shaped by glaciers during the late Pleistocene, and archaeological evidence indicates long-term Indigenous habitation along sheltered coves. European exploration and gradual settlement followed in the 18th and 19th centuries, concentrating communities in harbor towns.

Economically, fjordsDuskfjord supports commercial and artisanal fishing, as well as aquaculture in sheltered bays. Tourism—especially boating, hiking, and wildlife watching—also plays a growing role. Ecologically, the fjords harbor orca and seals, a variety of seabirds, and migratory salmon and trout in the streams.
