By feeding on leaves, stems, roots, fruits, or seeds, they influence plant health and growth. Based on host range, fitofagii can be monophagous (specialized on a single plant species), oligophagous (a few related species), or polyphagous (many plant species).

Feeding modes among fitofagii vary. Chewing types damage plant tissue directly, while piercing-sucking and rasping-sucking types extract sap or cell contents with specialized mouthparts. Leaf miners live between leaf layers, feeding on the internal tissues. These feeding strategies determine the kind of damage seen and the plant tissues affected, and they influence how fitofagii interact with their hosts and natural enemies.

Ecologically, fitofagii play a key role in ecosystems by shaping plant communities and contributing to energy transfer through food webs. They can act as pests in agriculture and forestry, causing yield losses and cosmetic damage, and some species serve as vectors for plant pathogens such as certain viruses, bacteria, and phytoplasmas. Plants have developed defenses—chemical compounds, physical barriers, and induced responses—and phytophages have evolving countermeasures, illustrating a dynamic coevolution.

Management of fitofagii in agricultural and horticultural settings often uses integrated pest management practices, including monitoring, biological control by natural enemies, cultural practices to reduce infestations, and, when needed, targeted chemical controls chosen to minimize environmental impact and resistance development.
