Finalitet is a term used primarily in Norwegian to denote finality or teleology—the idea that processes, actions, or beings are directed toward an end, purpose, or ultimate goal. It can refer to the end-state toward which something strives as well as to the normative aim guiding behavior or policy.

Etymology and background: The word derives from Latin finalis (end) and is closely linked to the concept of telos in ancient philosophy. In Aristotelian thought, final cause (the purpose for which a thing exists) is one of the four classical causes that explain why something is as it is. In later philosophy, teleology became a broader discussion about whether and how purposes play a role in natural and human phenomena.

Usage and scope: Finalitet is used to discuss both intentional aims in human action and purported purposes in natural processes. It is important to distinguish finalitet from related terms such as hensikt (intention) and mål (goal or objective). In science, especially biology, discussions of apparent finalitet or teleology are treated with caution; natural explanations typically rely on mechanisms and historical processes rather than conscious ends.
