Filterbedet, often translated as the filter bed, is a filtration unit consisting of a bed of granular media through which liquid passes to remove suspended solids, organic matter, and other contaminants. It is a central element in many water and wastewater treatment processes, as well as in some industrial filtration applications. The bed typically comprises layers of gravel and finer media such as sand, silica, or other specialty media.

As the liquid moves through the bed, particles are removed by physical straining and sedimentation, while fines are trapped in pore spaces. In biological filter beds, microorganisms form a biofilm that degrades organic compounds and reduces nutrient levels, a process particularly associated with slow filtration.

Common configurations include slow sand filtration, which uses a shallow, biologically active bed, and rapid sand or multimedia filtration, which uses deeper beds and higher flow rates to achieve faster solids removal. In many systems, media layers are arranged with coarse gravel at the bottom and finer sand or media on top.

Operation and maintenance involve regular monitoring of hydraulic loading and headloss, and periodic backwashing or air scour to remove accumulated solids. Media replacement or cleaning may be required when performance declines. Proper pretreatment and disinfection steps are typically used in drinking-water applications.

Filter beds are used in municipal water treatment, wastewater polishing, aquaculture filtration, and in some passive treatment schemes such as constructed wetlands. They are valued for their simplicity, low energy demand, and biological removal capabilities, though they require space and ongoing maintenance.
