Filmto is a fictional open-source platform described in media studies and design fiction as a tool for interactive film analysis. In this hypothetical project, Filmto provides a framework for indexing film content, tagging scenes, and generating shareable commentary that can be integrated into classrooms, research, or public discussion.

Origin and scope: Filmto was presented in design-fiction discussions beginning around 2019 as a thought experiment to explore digital humanities workflows. It is not a commercial product and has no widely deployed version; rather, it serves as a conceptual reference for how annotated film corpora might be managed.

Core features: A scene-level indexing system allows annotators to attach notes, motifs, cinematographic techniques, and sound cues to precise timecodes. Time-linked annotations can be discussed in threaded commentaries, with tags for narrative elements, actors, or themes. Annotations can be exported as JSON-LD or other interoperable formats, enabling integration with bibliographic software or video essay authorship tools. Privacy and access controls let individuals, groups, or courses share work while protecting rights and sensitive content.
