Timelinked

Timelinked is a concept in data management and information systems describing the practice of attaching explicit time-oriented links to data records to capture their historical states and transitions. In timelinked data, each item can reference previous and subsequent states through time-aware pointers, enabling navigation through an object’s history as it evolves.

Implementation of timelinking often relies on temporal data models, including valid time and transaction time, and may employ techniques such as versioning, time-stamped identifiers, or graph-based relationships. Timelinked systems can be designed around bitemporal data, where both the real-world validity of information and the record of when the information was stored are tracked. Common approaches include maintaining immutable histories, storing successive revisions, and using event- or state-based representations to reconstruct past scenes.

Applications for timelinking include audit trails, regulatory reporting, document and content management, financial recordkeeping, and any domain requiring reproducibility of historical states. In software design, timelinking is related to event sourcing and version control, where the sequence of events or changes can be replayed to reconstruct a system’s state at a given moment. Graph databases and specialized temporal databases are often employed to model and query timelinked relationships efficiently.

The term timelinked is not universally standardized and can be used variably across projects. Some literature refer to timelinking as a broader notion of linking data through time, while others describe concrete implementations that emphasize either validity periods or storage history. Key considerations include data consistency, time source synchronization, storage overhead, and the complexity of temporal queries.
