Field observation is a qualitative research method that records behaviors, events, and interactions in real-world settings. It emphasizes natural contexts over controlled laboratories, enabling researchers to capture routines, practices, and social dynamics that may be absent in experimental data. It is used across disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, education, ecology, and geography.

Approaches include participant observation, where the researcher engages with the group, and non-participant observation, where they observe without involvement. Observations can be structured with predefined checklists or unstructured to allow themes to emerge. Researchers may use time sampling, event sampling, or continuous recording to manage data collection.

Data collection relies on field notes, reflective memos, and sketches, often complemented by audio or video recordings, photos, and coding sheets. Ethical considerations are central: informed consent, privacy, confidentiality, and minimizing harm. The observer effect refers to changes in behavior caused by the observer's presence; overt studies disclose observation, while covert ones raise concerns.

Analysis typically involves coding and thematic interpretation, with triangulation from interviews, documents, or other sources. Field observation yields rich, contextual insight and ecological validity but faces limits such as researcher bias, limited generalizability, and time demands.

Applications range from ethnography and education research to wildlife biology and urban planning, where researchers document daily practices, interactions, and environmental conditions as they occur.
