Fibrillatsioonilt is a term that refers to the condition of being in fibrillation. Fibrillation is an abnormal, uncoordinated, and rapid contraction of muscle fibers, most commonly discussed in the context of the heart. When the heart muscle fibers fibrillate, they do not contract in a synchronized manner, leading to ineffective pumping of blood. This can manifest as either atrial fibrillation (AFib), which affects the upper chambers of the heart (atria), or ventricular fibrillation (VFib), which affects the lower chambers (ventricles).

Atrial fibrillation is characterized by rapid, irregular electrical impulses originating in the atria, causing them to quiver rather than beat effectively. This can lead to blood clots forming in the atria, which can then travel to the brain and cause a stroke. Ventricular fibrillation is a life-threatening condition where the ventricles also quiver uncontrollably. This prevents the heart from pumping any blood to the body, and without immediate intervention, it leads to cardiac arrest.

The causes of fibrillation are varied and can include underlying heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain genetic predispositions. The symptoms can range from palpitations and shortness of breath to dizziness and fainting, depending on the type and severity. Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to observe the electrical activity of the heart. Treatment aims to restore a normal heart rhythm and prevent complications, often involving medications to control the heart rate and rhythm, or procedures like cardioversion or ablation.
