Materials and production methods form a core focus. Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and flax are studied for their mechanical behavior and sustainability. Synthetic polymer fibers, including polyester, nylon, and aramid, are produced by various spinning and extrusion processes. Inorganic and optical fibers, such as silica and glass fibers, are used for high-strength reinforcement and light transmission. Manufacturing methods include melt spinning, wet spinning, dry spinning for textiles, and preform drawing for optical fibers, followed by coating and treatment to enhance durability and functionality.

A significant subfield is optical fiber technology, which concentrates on transmitting light through slender fibers for telecommunications, sensing, and medical applications. Optical fibers offer high bandwidth, low loss, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, with performance enhanced by specialized coatings and fiber designs.

Applications of fiberteknologi are diverse. In textiles, fibers enable apparel, technical fabrics, and smart textiles with integrated sensors. In composites, fibers reinforce polymers for automotive and aerospace components. Other uses include construction materials, insulation, energy storage and efficiency, and various sensing and medical devices.

Current trends emphasize sustainability, including bio-based and recycled fibers, improved recyclability, and reduced environmental impact. Advances continue in high-performance fibers, smart fabrics, and standardized testing and certification to support safe, scalable deployment.
