Surface-mount technology, often abbreviated as SMT, is a method for producing electronic circuit boards. In SMT, components are mounted directly onto the surface of the printed circuit board (PCB) rather than being inserted through holes. This approach allows for smaller and more densely packed circuits compared to through-hole technology.

Components designed for SMT are called surface-mount devices (SMDs). These components typically have leads or solder points that are soldered to pads on the PCB surface. The manufacturing process for SMT involves automated pick-and-place machines that accurately position the SMDs onto solder paste applied to the PCB. The assembly is then passed through a reflow oven, where the solder paste melts and solidifies, creating electrical and mechanical connections.

The advantages of SMT include higher component density, reduced board size, lower manufacturing costs due to automation, and improved performance at higher frequencies. SMT has become the dominant technology in the manufacturing of electronic devices, from smartphones and computers to automotive electronics and industrial control systems. It has enabled the miniaturization and increased functionality of modern electronic products.
