Feedback instruments are measurement devices and subsystems used within feedback loops to monitor an output and influence the input, with the aim of achieving a desired response. They are fundamental in control theory, instrumentation, and experimental setups.

Typical components include sensors or transducers that convert physical quantities to electrical signals, data acquisition systems to digitize measurements, signal conditioners to adjust signal level and quality, and actuators or controllers that apply corrective actions. These elements work together to close the loop and regulate a process.

In a closed-loop system, the process variable is measured by the instrument, compared with a reference, and a controller calculates an adjustment that is applied to the plant via an actuator. The performance is described by stability, speed of response, and accuracy. Effective feedback instrumentation reduces error, enhances repeatability, and can improve robustness to disturbances.

Common types of feedback instruments include temperature, pressure, position, and flow sensors; electrical voltage or current sensors; data loggers and multichannel analyzers; and process controllers or digital systems implementing control algorithms. In practice, these instruments may be partially or wholly software-driven, with embedded sensors providing real-time data for monitoring and control.

Applications span industrial automation, robotics, automotive and aerospace systems, HVAC, laboratory experiments, and consumer electronics, where feedback is used to maintain setpoints, track trends, or study dynamic behavior. The concept has its roots in early 20th-century control theory, and modern instrumentation emphasizes reliability, calibration, and interoperability standards.
