Exoforisch, commonly described as exophoric deixis, is a linguistic category referring to deictic expressions whose referent lies outside the immediate linguistic text and relies on external context for interpretation. In contrast to endophoric (or anaphoric) references, which point to elements already mentioned within the discourse, exophoric references anchor to objects, people, places, or events in the surrounding physical or situational context.

Markers of exophoric reference are typically demonstratives and spatial expressions, such as this, that, there, and over there, or phrases like the sign on the wall, the mountain we can see, or the person with the red hat. The meaning of these expressions depends on shared perceptual or situational cues between speaker and listener, such as location, gaze, or visible environment. Exophora frequently occurs in conversation, in signage, in film and photography captions, and in multimodal discourse where visual context complements spoken language.

Exophoric reference is often discussed together with other deictic and referential strategies. It is distinguished from endophora, where a reference is anchored to text within the discourse, and from cataphora, where the referent is introduced later in the text.
