Etching is an intaglio printmaking process in which a metal plate, typically copper or zinc, is coated with a protective ground. The artist scratches through the ground to reveal the metal, then the plate is immersed in acid, which bites the exposed lines. After removing the ground, ink is applied and wiped, leaving ink in the etched grooves. Paper pressed onto the plate transfers the image. Etching yields varied line quality and tonal effects and differs from engraving, where lines are cut directly.

Techniques and materials: In addition to pure line etching, artists use aquatint for tonal areas, soft-ground for textures, and combine etching with drypoint or mezzotint. The resulting prints are typically produced in editions, often signed and sometimes numbered.

History: Etching emerged in Europe in the 16th century, with early practitioners such as Daniel Hopfer. It matured in Dutch and French workshops and reached its expressive peak in Rembrandt’s prints. The 18th and 19th centuries saw widespread use by artists including Goya and Daumier. The 20th century brought renewed interest and experimentation, leading to contemporary developments in the medium.

Legacy and conservation: Etchings are valued for the immediacy of line and subtle tonal gradation. They are produced in multiple impressions, offering accessibility to collectors. Preservation emphasizes paper stability, ink adherence, and plate condition, with careful handling, storage, and environmental controls to prevent deterioration.
