Etäpäätteet, known in English as remote terminals or terminal emulators, are software programs that allow users to access and control a remote computer system from their local machine. Essentially, they create a virtual connection, making the local computer behave as if it were directly connected to the remote system. This is typically achieved by simulating the behavior of a physical terminal, a device that was once the primary way to interact with mainframe computers.

The primary function of an etäpääte is to transmit user input from the local device to the remote server and display the output received from the server on the local screen. This enables users to execute commands, run applications, and manage files on the remote system, regardless of their physical location. Common protocols used for establishing these connections include SSH (Secure Shell) for encrypted and secure communication, and Telnet, although Telnet is now largely deprecated due to its lack of security.
