estomatal
Estomatal refers to stomata, the microscopic pores on the surfaces of plant organs that regulate gas exchange and water loss. The stomatal unit consists of a pore, or stoma, flanked by a pair of guard cells; in many species, additional subsidiary cells assist function. Stomata occur primarily on leaves but are also present on stems, flowers, and fruits. Leaf surfaces vary in stomatal distribution: hypostomatic leaves bear stomata mainly on the lower surface, amphistomatic leaves have stomata on both sides, and other patterns exist across taxa.
