In Finnish usage the word is often associated with the traditional 3000-metre steeplechase, which combines distance running with barriers and a water jump, as well as with organized obstacle courses that require competitors to overcome a variety of obstacles.

In track and field, estejuoksu refers to the 3000-metre steeplechase. Runners complete laps on a standard track while clearing a sequence of barriers and a pit of water at set points. The event tests speed, endurance, hurdle technique, and rhythm, since competitors must maintain pace while negotiating the obstacles.

In obstacle course racing, estejuoksu denotes events where participants navigate a designed course featuring obstacles such as walls, bars, ropes, cargo nets, mud, and water. Courses vary widely in length and difficulty, and races are typically timed with winners determined by fastest completion or best overall performance. Safety protocols and obstacle standards are important considerations, and courses are supervised by event organizers.

History and development: The track steeplechase originated from horse racing in Ireland and evolved into a formal track event. The men’s Olympic 3000-metre steeplechase debuted in the early 20th century, with the women’s event following later, becoming an Olympic race in 2008.
