Epäaromattinen refers to organic compounds that do not exhibit aromaticity. Aromaticity is a property of cyclic, planar molecules with a delocalized pi electron system that confers unusual stability and reactivity. Compounds lacking these characteristics are considered non-aromatic or, in Finnish, epäaromattinen.

Non-aromatic compounds can be broadly categorized into several groups. Alicyclic compounds, such as cyclohexane, are saturated cyclic hydrocarbons and do not possess a delocalized pi system. Alkenes and alkynes within a ring can also be non-aromatic if they do not fulfill the criteria for aromaticity, often due to a lack of planarity or insufficient pi electrons.

A key distinction is made between non-aromatic and anti-aromatic compounds. Anti-aromatic compounds are cyclic, planar, and possess a delocalized pi electron system, but they have a number of pi electrons that violates Hückel's rule (4n+2 pi electrons, where n is an integer). This leads to significantly increased instability compared to typical non-aromatic or aromatic systems. Therefore, epäaromattinen generally encompasses compounds that are neither aromatic nor anti-aromatic.

The chemical properties of epäaromattinen compounds are generally more akin to their analogous acyclic or aliphatic counterparts. They typically undergo addition reactions with unsaturated bonds and substitution reactions on saturated carbons, rather than the electrophilic aromatic substitution characteristic of aromatic molecules. The absence of resonance stabilization means they are less stable and more reactive in ways dictated by their specific functional groups and ring structure.
