Epiteelisyys refers to the quality or state of being epiteletic. An epiteletic organism or trait is one that is adapted to a specific purpose or function. This concept is most commonly discussed in the context of evolutionary biology and philosophy of biology, where it is used to describe traits that appear to be designed for a particular role. For example, the eye is often cited as an epiteletic structure due to its complex adaptation for vision.

The term "epiteletic" was coined by the philosopher of biology Daniel Dennett, drawing inspiration from the Greek words "epi" (upon, for) and "telos" (end, purpose). Dennett used this term to distinguish between naturally evolved adaptations and intentionally designed artifacts. While artifacts are clearly created with a specific purpose in mind, evolved traits can also exhibit a high degree of functional specificity that makes them appear purposeful.

Discussions around epiteelisyys often involve the debate between teleological explanations (explanations based on purpose or end goals) and mechanistic explanations (explanations based on causal processes). Evolutionary biology generally favors mechanistic explanations, arguing that apparent purpose in biological traits arises from the process of natural selection, where traits that enhance survival and reproduction are more likely to be passed on. Epiteelisyys, in this view, describes the outcome of this process rather than an inherent, pre-ordained purpose. The concept helps to articulate how natural selection can produce structures and behaviors that are strikingly well-suited to their environments and functions.
