Envelopemagneetit, also known as electromagnetic actuators or holding magnets, are devices that use electromagnetism to create a holding force. They consist of a coil of wire wrapped around a ferromagnetic core, typically made of iron. When an electric current is passed through the coil, it generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts a ferromagnetic armature, which is usually a separate piece of metal that is free to move. The attraction between the core and the armature creates the holding force.

These magnets are called "envelopemagneetit" because they are often used to hold doors, gates, or other structures closed, effectively "enveloping" them with a magnetic seal. The holding force can be quite strong, depending on the size and design of the magnet, as well as the current supplied. When the current is turned off, the magnetic field collapses, and the holding force is released, allowing the armature and the attached object to move freely.

Envelopemagneetit are commonly found in security systems, automatic doors, industrial machinery, and access control systems. They are valued for their simplicity, reliability, and the ability to be controlled electronically. The force can be adjusted by varying the electrical current, and they can be designed to operate with either direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC). Fail-safe and fail-secure configurations are possible, where the magnet either releases or remains engaged in the event of a power failure, respectively. Their non-mechanical operation means there are no moving parts within the magnet itself, contributing to their durability.
