Enterotoksijenik, also known as enterotoxigenic, refers to organisms, particularly bacteria, that produce enterotoxins—substances that affect the intestines and cause gastrointestinal disturbances. The term is most commonly associated with certain pathogenic strains of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, especially enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC).

Enterotoxigenic bacteria are a major cause of diarrheal diseases worldwide, particularly in developing countries and in cases of traveler's diarrhea. These organisms colonize the intestinal mucosa and release toxins that interfere with normal fluid and electrolyte absorption. The primary enterotoxins produced by ETEC include heat-labile toxin (LT) and heat-stable toxin (ST), both of which stimulate excessive secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen, leading to watery diarrhea.

Infections caused by enterotoxigenic bacteria are typically transmitted through the fecal-oral route, often via contaminated food and water. Symptoms usually include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and dehydration, which can be severe in vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.

Diagnosis of enterotoxigenic infections involves stool tests to detect the presence of toxins or the bacteria themselves. Prevention strategies include proper sanitation, hygiene practices, and vaccination. Treatment generally focuses on rehydration and electrolyte replacement; antibiotics may be used in severe cases or when bacterial eradication is necessary.
