Energiajuomat are beverages formulated to provide a quick boost in alertness and energy. They typically contain caffeine as the main stimulant, and also include ingredients such as taurine, guarana, glucuronolactone and B vitamins, with sweetness provided by sugar or non-caloric sweeteners. They are marketed as products that improve focus and performance, often used during study sessions, sports, or social activities.

Caffeine content varies widely. A common serving is a 250 ml can containing about 80 mg of caffeine (roughly 32 mg per 100 ml). Some products have higher caffeine levels or add other stimulants, making the total stimulant effect stronger. In addition to caffeine, many formulas rely on sugars for quick energy, though sugar-free variants with artificial sweeteners are also widely available.

The modern energy drink market began in the late 20th century, with Lipovitan in Japan and the global popularization by Red Bull in 1987. Since then a wide range of brands has entered markets around the world, including Nordic and Finnish retailers and consumers who seek a rapid energy boost in various contexts, from sport to study.

Health and regulation: Caffeine and other stimulants can cause adverse effects such as insomnia, nervousness, increased heart rate and stomach upset, especially at higher doses or in sensitive individuals. Energy drinks are not recommended for children, pregnant people, or individuals with certain heart conditions. Labeling requirements vary by country, with disclosures of caffeine and sugar content and, in some places, restrictions on sales to minors or marketing aimed at youth. Mixing energy drinks with alcohol is common in some settings but can mask intoxication and raise health risks.

In Finland, energy drinks have a notable presence in the market, offered in both sugar-containing and sugar-free forms and widely consumed among young adults and athletes.
