Endtoendviiveenä is a nonstandard compound that blends the English term end-to-end with the Finnish word viiveenä, meaning latency. In networking and distributed systems, it is understood as end-to-end latency—the total time required for a data unit to travel from a source to a destination and for the response to be received.

End-to-end latency comprises several delay components. These include processing delay at the source, transmission delay across links, propagation delay on the physical medium, queuing delay at routers and switches, and processing delay at intermediate servers. The total latency is the sum of these delays along the entire path, from origin to final destination and back if measuring round-trip time.

Measurement of end-to-end latency can be performed in different ways. One-way latency requires clock synchronization between source and destination to capture precise timings, while round-trip time (RTT) is commonly measured with tools such as ping. Application-level timing, synthetic benchmarks, and end-to-end monitoring from the user perspective can also quantify latency, sometimes complemented by traceroute or similar methods to diagnose where delays occur.

Several factors influence end-to-end latency. Link bandwidth relative to packet size, physical distance, routing efficiency, network congestion, buffering strategies, and the performance of servers and virtualization layers all contribute. Environmental and architectural choices, such as the use of content delivery networks, edge computing, and protocol optimizations, can also affect the observed latency.

End-to-end latency is critical for real-time applications like voice and video communication, online gaming, interactive cloud services, and mission-critical distributed systems. It informs performance targets, QoS planning, and infrastructure design decisions.
