Endometriumbiopsziával, often translated as endometrial biopsy, is a medical procedure performed to obtain a small sample of the uterine lining, the endometrium, for examination. This tissue sample is then sent to a laboratory to be analyzed by a pathologist. The primary purpose of an endometrial biopsy is diagnostic, helping to identify or rule out various conditions affecting the uterus.

Common reasons for performing an endometrial biopsy include investigating abnormal uterine bleeding, such as heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or postmenopausal bleeding. It is also used to assess the endometrium for precancerous changes or endometrial cancer. In cases of infertility, a biopsy can help evaluate the receptivity of the endometrium to implantation. Additionally, it may be used to diagnose or monitor conditions like endometriosis or adenomyosis, although it's not the primary diagnostic tool for these.

The procedure itself is typically performed in a doctor's office and is relatively quick. The patient may experience some cramping or discomfort during and after the procedure. A speculum is inserted into the vagina, similar to a Pap smear, and then a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is gently passed through the cervix into the uterus. Suction is applied to withdraw a small tissue sample. The collected sample is then sent for histological analysis. Results usually take a few days to a week.
