Endometriumachtige refers to tissue that resembles the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus. This term is most commonly used in the context of endometriosis, a medical condition where endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus. This tissue, though located elsewhere, exhibits similar characteristics to the normal endometrium, including hormonal responsiveness.

During the menstrual cycle, the tissue within the uterus undergoes changes: thickening in preparation for a potential pregnancy and shedding if pregnancy does not occur, resulting in menstruation. Endometriumachtige tissue found outside the uterus can also respond to these hormonal fluctuations. This means it can thicken, break down, and bleed each month, leading to inflammation, pain, and scar tissue formation in the areas where it grows.

The presence of endometriumachtige tissue outside the uterine cavity is the defining feature of endometriosis. This ectopic tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, and in the pelvic lining, and in rarer cases, can extend to other organs. The symptoms associated with endometriosis, such as pelvic pain, painful periods, painful intercourse, and infertility, are largely attributed to the inflammatory and reactive processes triggered by this endometriumachtige tissue. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques and surgical visualization.
