Emotins are a theoretical construct used in affective computing to denote discrete, quantifiable units of emotion that can be represented, stored, and manipulated by computational systems. The term is not universally standardized and appears in various theoretical and speculative discussions as a way to model affect in a compact, machine-readable form.

Most formulations describe an emotin as a minimal affective state with defined properties. Common models use dimensions such as valence (negative to positive) and arousal (calm to excited), while some approaches add additional attributes like dominance, novelty, or goal relevance. Emotins may be discrete categories (for example, joy, sadness, anger) or continuous values along one or more axes. In some theories, multiple emotins can combine to form more complex emotional states within a system.

Applications of emotins appear primarily in the fields of affective computing, human–computer interaction, and social robotics. They can inform how an AI perceives user cues, selects responses, or adapts its interface and behavior to match or influence a user’s perceived mood. In distributed or social systems, emotins might be propagated as signals to model group affect or to coordinate autonomous agents.

Emotins are distinct from emoticons or emoji, which are visual symbols used to convey emotion in text or imagery. They are also separate from psychological theories of emotion, serving more as a computational abstraction or token used to represent affect within algorithms.
