Embossing is a technique that creates a raised relief on a surface by pressing a pattern into the material. It is used on a range of substrates, including paper, leather, fabric, metal, and plastic, for decorative and functional purposes. In paper crafts, embossing typically uses a pair of dies or an embossing folder and a press or roller to create a raised impression. If no color is applied, the result is blind embossing; when color is added to the raised areas, the effect is colored embossing, and foil or pigment can be applied for metallic or contrasting highlights (foil embossing).

Heat embossing specifically uses ink or clear ink, a layer of embossing powder, and a heat source to melt the powder into a raised, glossy image. In textiles and leather, embossing often employs heated rollers or stamping to imprint patterns or textures. In metal and plastic fabrication, embossing is achieved with dies or punches that displace material to form a relief, sometimes as part of decorative ornament or functional features.

Common applications include decorative elements on stationery, greeting cards, and packaging, branding on leather goods, and security features on documents where micro-embossing adds a hard-to-forge texture. Advantages include a tactile, durable effect and a subtle visual texture; drawbacks include higher production costs and the need for compatible equipment and substrates.
