Emaljdemineralisering, often referred to as enamel demineralization, is a natural process where minerals, primarily calcium and phosphate, are lost from tooth enamel. This occurs when acids, produced by bacteria in the mouth feeding on sugars and starches, come into contact with the tooth surface. These acids create an environment that leaches minerals out of the enamel structure.

The early stages of demineralization may not be visible to the naked eye. However, as the process continues, it can lead to the formation of white spots on the teeth, which are early signs of enamel weakening. If left unchecked, demineralization can progress, making the enamel more susceptible to further damage and eventually leading to cavities, also known as dental caries.

The reversal of demineralization, known as remineralization, can occur when the balance of minerals in the mouth is restored. Fluoride plays a crucial role in this process. Fluoride ions integrate into the enamel structure, making it more resistant to acid attacks and promoting the re-deposition of minerals. Saliva also aids in remineralization by neutralizing acids and providing essential minerals. Maintaining good oral hygiene, limiting sugar intake, and using fluoride toothpaste are key strategies to prevent demineralization and encourage remineralization.
