In metamaterials and photonics, engineered structures can exhibit effective fields that obey equations formally identical to Maxwell's, producing electromagnetlike wave propagation, polarization phenomena, and mode coupling. In condensed matter physics, emergent gauge fields in spin liquids, topological insulators, and Weyl semimetals can generate electromagnetlike dynamics for collective excitations, such as magnons or phonons, even though there are no free charges.

Features include wave solutions, field-like couplings, and the possibility of guided modes, but underlying carriers and interactions differ, so energy and momentum transfer follow the specific system constraints.
