Electricians work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings, installing wiring, outlets, lighting, and control systems; they may also install and maintain electrical panels, circuit breakers, and low voltage systems such as data and communications networks.

Duties include reading blueprints and electrical schematics, calculating load requirements, selecting wiring methods, pulling permits, testing continuity and insulation, and ensuring compliance with electrical codes. They diagnose faults using testing equipment like multimeters, handheld testers, and infrared cameras. They may troubleshoot, schedule repairs, and coordinate with other construction professionals.

Most electricians learn through formal apprenticeship programs combining classroom instruction with paid on-the-job training; typical programs last 4 to 5 years. In many jurisdictions, electricians must be licensed or certified; requirements usually include documented experience, a passing exam, and ongoing continuing education.

Safety and standards are central to the work. Electricians follow national and local electrical codes and use personal protective equipment, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices to prevent shocks, burns, and falls. They also adhere to company policies and environmental and building regulations.

Work environments vary. Electricians may be employed by electrical contractors, construction firms, or operate as independent tradespeople. They work indoors and outdoors, in homes, offices, and industrial facilities, often with irregular or extended hours to accommodate projects and emergencies.

Specializations can include residential, commercial, or industrial electrical work, as well as control systems, automation, energy efficiency, or solar power installation. Career advancement may lead to master electrician status, project supervision, or business ownership.
