Elastyn is a fictional elastic polymer used as a teaching and visualization tool in polymer science. It represents a highly extensible, cross-linked network whose mechanical response can be tuned to illustrate key concepts in elastomer physics. Although Elastyn does not refer to a specific commercial material, its properties are described in textbooks as a model for understanding elasticity, resilience, and energy dissipation in polymers.

Structure and properties: Elastyn is envisioned as a three-dimensional network formed by flexible polymer chains connected by sparse cross-links. By varying the cross-link density, chain length, and the nature of cross-linkers, Elastyn-like behavior and strain-stiffening can be simulated. In the model, Elastyn has a high elongation at break, low permanent set, and relatively low hysteresis at moderate temperatures. Real materials with similar behavior include silicone elastomers and polyurethanes, which serve as practical analogs.

Synthesis and processing: In the theoretical framework, Elastyn is introduced through idealized reaction schemes such as step-growth polymerization with multifunctional cross-linkers or through physical cross-links. In practice, researchers study comparable systems via network theory, rheology, and finite-element analysis rather than attempting to synthesize Elastyn itself.

Applications and significance: Elastyn is used to illustrate how network architecture affects mechanical properties, to teach concepts such as modulus, resilience, Mullins effect, and hysteresis, and to validate computational models of elasticity. It provides a neutral reference point for comparing real elastomer materials.
