Efterskole is a Danish voluntary residential school for young people, typically aged 14 to 18, usually attended after completing the 9th or 10th grade. A standard efterskole program lasts one academic year, though some schools offer shorter or longer terms. Students live on campus and combine traditional subjects with activities and personal development in a day-to-day routine that mixes classes, meals, and communal life.

The educational model emphasizes democratic values, social learning, and personal responsibility. Many efterskoler organize courses into profiles or “linjer,” such as sports, performing arts, science, nature, digital media, or entrepreneurship, allowing students to specialize while gaining core academic competencies. Decision-making is often shared through student councils and involvement in school governance, reflecting the schools’ emphasis on participation and community.

Funding and governance are distinctive features. Efterskoler receive government subsidies per pupil, which helps keep tuition affordable, while families pay a fee for the term.
