The word “efnis” in Icelandic loosely translates to “content” and “skipti” means “transit,” reflecting the company’s dual focus on moving both physical goods and complex information networks across the country. The firm was founded in Reykjavik by a group of entrepreneurs from the software and shipping industries in 2001, with the aim of providing an integrated freight and digital solutions platform for SMEs in northern Iceland.

The company’s first major contract was a partnership with the Icelandic postal service for the distribution of mail and lightweight parcels to remote settlements, making use of a mixed fleet of fuel‑efficient trucks and electric motorbikes.
