Effektorid (Estonian for effectors) are components that execute a response after a stimulus is detected. They can be molecules, cells, or organs that carry out downstream actions of signaling pathways or reflex circuits. The term emphasizes the role of producing an observable change rather than sensing the signal.

In cellular signaling, an effector is the downstream target that translates a signal into action. Common effectors include enzymes such as adenylyl cyclase and phospholipase C, ion channels, metabolic enzymes, and transcription factors. These effectors respond to second messengers like cAMP or calcium to alter metabolism, gene expression, or cell behavior, thereby implementing the response dictated by the stimulus.

In immunology, effector elements are those that mediate the active defense against pathogens. Effector cells include cytotoxic T lymphocytes, natural killer cells, plasma cells, macrophages and neutrophils. They perform actions such as killing infected cells, phagocytosis, antibody production, and cytokine secretion. Effector molecules—antibodies, cytokines, complement proteins, and reactive oxygen species—act directly to neutralize pathogens or modulate the immune response.

Effector function is also central to physiology, as muscles and glands act as effectors of motor and autonomic outputs, responding to neural signals with contraction or secretion. Understanding effector function helps describe how signals are converted into concrete biological actions and how dysregulation at the effector level can contribute to disease.
