Effectormediated is a term used to describe biological processes in which the outcome is produced by effectors—molecules or cells that execute the response after receiving a signal. An effector may be an enzyme, a channel protein, a cytokine, an antibody, or a specialized immune cell, among other entities. The emphasis is on the action being carried out by the effector rather than solely on upstream receptors or signaling steps.

In immunology, effectormediated responses constitute the effector phase of the immune reaction. Effector cells such as cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells deliver cytotoxic molecules to target cells; antibodies mediate neutralization, opsonization, and, in concert with complement, lysis; and phagocytes remove pathogens following recognition. The specific effectors involved depend on the type of immune challenge and the context of the response.

In pharmacology and physiology, effectormediated actions describe how a drug or endogenous signal produces its effects through downstream effector targets, including receptors, enzymes, ion channels, or transcription factors. In cell biology, effector proteins such as actin-binding proteins, motor proteins, or signaling enzymes enact changes in movement, metabolism, or gene expression as dictated by signaling cascades.

Characterizing an effectormediated process often involves identifying the active effector components and demonstrating that altering their activity changes the outcome. Examples include perforin/granzyme–mediated cytotoxicity, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and complement-mediated lysis in immunity, or kinase and phosphatase effectors in signaling networks.
