Effaceras is an extinct genus of ammonoid mollusks that belonged to the subclass Cephalopoda, which includes modern squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish. Living during the Late Paleozoic era, particularly in the Pennsylvanian to Permian periods, effaceras species are primarily known from fossil records. These marine animals were characterized by their coiled, chambered shells, which served both as protection and buoyancy regulators.

The shells of effaceras are distinguishable by their intricate ornamentation, such as ribs, tubercles, and sutures, which helped scientists differentiate them from related genera. They are believed to have inhabited shallow, warm marine environments, where they played a role as predators, feeding on smaller marine invertebrates and plankton.
