An econometrist is a professional who applies econometric methods to economic data to test theories, estimate relationships, and forecast outcomes. The term is often used interchangeably with econometrician, though some practitioners reserve econometrist for applied analysts who emphasize data-driven interpretation of economic questions rather than methodological development.

Typical tasks include model specification, estimation, and diagnostic checking; causal inference using instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, difference-in-differences, and other approaches; and forecasting with time-series or panel-data methods. Econometrist may build structural models or reduced-form specifications, conduct robustness checks, and assess endogeneity, heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, and unobserved confounders. They may also evaluate policy interventions, program effectiveness, or market dynamics.

Practitioners work in universities, central banks, government agencies, international organizations, consulting firms, and private industry. Education typically requires graduate training in economics, econometrics, statistics, or data science, with strengths in mathematical methods and economic theory. Proficiency in programming and econometric software—such as R, Python, Stata, EViews, Matlab, or SAS—is common.

Ethical data use, transparency, and reproducibility are increasingly emphasized, with findings communicated to policymakers, business leaders, or the public in accessible language and with clear statements of uncertainty.
