eTLD1

eTLD1 is a proposed Internet domain extension that aims to provide a new category of top-level domains (TLDs) for specialized communities. Officially referred to as the Extended Top-Level Domain One, the concept was first introduced in a 2018 research paper published by the International Telecommunication Union. The proposal seeks to complement the existing domain namespace by offering a flexible infrastructure that can adapt to emerging internet usage patterns, particularly for data-intensive applications such as the Internet of Things, blockchain networks, and scientific research portals.

The technical foundation of eTLD1 rests on an extension of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocol. Unlike conventional generic TLDs (.com, .org, .net), eTLD1 utilizes a dual-layered authentication mechanism that incorporates cryptographic hash functions and an optional decentralized registry via blockchain technology. This design is intended to increase security, reduce the likelihood of typosquatting, and provide transparent dispute resolution. The proposed transition plan recommends incremental deployment, allowing current registries to register eTLD1 names through established domain registrars that comply with the new technical standards.

Governance is proposed to be overseen by a not‑for‑profit foundation, the Extended Top-Level Domain Consortium, which would operate under the oversight of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The consortium would be responsible for policy development, dispute resolution, and coordination with national regulatory bodies. In its initial beta phase, eTLD1 would be available only to accredited organizations and accredited managed hosts, with broader public availability contingent upon successful stability tests.

Early adopters include several national research networks that conducted pilots in 2019 and 2020. Preliminary results indicated improved resilience to DDoS attacks and easier integration with existing security protocols. However, widespread adoption remains limited, primarily due to the need for compatibility updates across existing DNS infrastructure and the perceived complexity of the new authorization procedures. The future of eTLD1 will depend on continued research, cross‑industry collaboration, and the gradual integration of its technological innovations into standard DNS operations.
