Dwuletnie is a term used in botany to describe organisms whose life cycle spans two years. It is the Polish equivalent of the botanical category “biennial.” The word combines dwu- meaning two and letnie (yearly), reflecting the two-year duration.

In the typical biennial life cycle, plants grow vegetatively during the first year, building storage organs such as roots, tubers, or a rosette of leaves. During the second year, they resume growth, flower, set seed, and usually die after the reproductive phase. This pattern distinguishes dwuletnie species from annuals, which complete their life cycle in one year, and perennials, which live for more than two years.

In horticulture and gardening, dwuletnie species are valued for their attraction in borders and for their staggered flowering over two seasons. Common examples include Digitalis (foxglove) and Alcea (hollyhock). Some plants, such as certain forms of Daucus carota (carrot) or Allium species (onions), are often described as biennial in their wild life cycle, though cultivated forms may be grown as annuals or behave differently under garden conditions.

Dwuletnie contrasts with roczne (annual) and wieloletnie (perennial) plants, reflecting a particular strategy of growth, reproduction, and survival. The term is mainly used in botanical and horticultural contexts and helps gardeners plan crop rotation, pruning, and flower bed design according to the plants’ life cycles.
