Dukesystemet, or the Duke System, is a term used by historians to describe a governance model in which sovereign authority is delegated to regional rulers titled as dukes. The system appeared in various medieval and early modern European polities, and in some cases in neighboring regions with duchies. Under this arrangement, a duke governed a duchy with a degree of administrative, judicial, and military power, acting as the crown's representative in the territory.

The duchal authorities typically held lands as fiefs granted by the sovereign. In return, they owed loyalty, military service, and regular tribute or taxes, and they participated in national or imperial councils. The central government could nominate or depose dukes, set conditions through capitulations or charters, and intervene when necessary. Local institutions—courts, fiscal offices, provincial militias—were integrated into the ducal system, while the duke maintained day-to-day governance of the duchy and its inhabitants.

Variations of the dukesystemet ranged from relatively autonomous rule in large and strategically important duchies to tightly supervised governance in more constrained environments. The system often served as a framework for central authorities to manage distant or diverse territories without creating a fully centralized bureaucratic state. It could facilitate local administration and military coordination, but also entrenched noble privilege and layered authority that could complicate royal or imperial policy.

Its decline came with the rise of centralized monarchies, professional administrations, codified law, and standing armies. In many regions the dukesystemet gave way to bureaucratic governance and constitutional limits on noble power, though its legacy influenced later concepts of provincial administration and regional governance.
