Duality is a broad concept that describes a relationship or correspondence between two aspects that reflect or complement each other. The plural form “dualitys” is not standard in English; most writing uses “dualities” to refer to multiple instances of duality.

In mathematics and logic, duality often exposes a symmetry between structures. Examples include dual spaces in linear algebra, where every vector space has a corresponding dual space of linear functionals; graph duality in planarity, where faces and vertices swap roles; and projective duality in geometry, which relates points to lines. In category theory, dualities arise from reversing arrows, giving dual statements and theorems. Optimization uses primal–dual relationships to bound and solve problems, with the dual problem providing insights into sensitivity and efficiency. Fourier transform and other integral transforms are viewed as dualities between time/space and frequency domains.

In physics, dualities reveal deep connections between seemingly different theories. Wave–particle duality in quantum mechanics shows light and matter exhibit both wave-like and particle-like properties. String theory features dualities such as T-duality and S-duality, linking apparently distinct geometric or coupling regimes. Gauge theory often exhibits electric–magnetic duality, suggesting that different descriptions can capture the same underlying physics.

In linguistics and philosophy, dualities describe how complex systems can be understood in terms of paired components, such as the duality of patterning in language (discrete units forming meaningful structures) or the broader mind–body or causal relationships described in various schools of thought.

Across disciplines, dualities provide powerful frameworks for translating problems, revealing hidden structures, and unifying apparently disparate phenomena.
