Driver circuits are electronic circuits that provide the appropriate electrical signals to control a load, typically power devices such as transistors, LEDs, or motors. They serve as an interface between a low-power control system (such as a microcontroller or FPGA) and a higher-power circuit, delivering the required voltage and current, shaping signal edges, and offering protection against faults.

Gate driver circuits are a common form, designed to switch transistors such as MOSFETs or IGBTs in power electronics. They supply the correct gate voltage, manage rise and fall times, and often include high-side and low-side drive capability, isolation, and schemes such as bootstrap or charge-pump supplies. Isolated gate drivers use opto-isolators or transformers to provide galvanic isolation between control logic and the power stage, improving safety and noise performance.

Other driver types include LED drivers, which regulate current or voltage to LEDs for stable light output and long life, and motor drivers, which implement control of DC, brushless DC, or stepper motors through H-bridge or half-bridge configurations and PWM control, frequently with current sensing and protection features.

Key design considerations for driver circuits include drive strength, output impedance, timing accuracy, dead-time to prevent shoot-through, protection features (overcurrent, undervoltage, overtemperature), EMI/EMC considerations, and thermal management. Layout and isolation strategy are important to minimize noise coupling and ensure reliable operation.

Applications span switching power supplies, motor control, LED lighting, and other systems that require precise, protected interfaces between control logic and power electronics.
