Drenagesystemer, or drainage systems, are engineering networks designed to remove unwanted water from urban, agricultural, and building environments. Their purpose is to prevent flooding, reduce moisture-related damage, and protect infrastructure. They collect surface water and groundwater and transport it to outlets, often using gravity with or without pumping.

They can be classified by function: surface drainage for streets, parking areas, and landscapes using channels, swales, and ditches; subsurface drainage that uses perforated pipes or tile drains in trenches to lower groundwater; building drainage that directs water away from foundations and other structures; and agricultural drainage that reclaims land by lowering water tables through tile drains or open ditches.

A typical drainage network includes inlets or catch basins, pipes or open channels, manholes for access, and outlet structures. Pumps or sump basins may be used where gravity alone cannot move water. Design depends on rainfall or runoff characteristics, soil permeability, slope, land use, and the required discharge or groundwater control.

Design and operation follow hydrological, geotechnical, and environmental considerations. Standards and practices vary by country and jurisdiction. Modern drenagesystemer are often integrated with green infrastructure—retention basins, permeable pavements, and vegetated swales—to reduce runoff and improve water quality.

Maintenance is essential: regular inspection, cleaning of inlets and pipes, removal of sediment and debris, and servicing of pumps. Ongoing monitoring helps prevent blockages, failures, and drainage inefficiencies.
