drajver

Drajver is a loanword used in several South Slavic languages for driver. In IT, drajver most often refers to a device driver: a software module that lets an operating system communicate with a hardware device such as a printer, graphics card, or network adapter. It translates OS commands into device-specific operations and exposes a standard interface for software.

Drivers act as intermediaries between the OS kernel and hardware. They manage resources, handle interrupts, and perform I/O requests. The same device may have different drivers depending on vendor and OS, and drivers must initialize, configure, and report errors.

Types and platforms: Linux drivers are typically kernel modules; Windows drivers may run in kernel space or as signed user-mode components. Common categories include graphics, storage, network, and USB drivers. Modern systems use plug-and-play to locate and install compatible drivers automatically.

Installation and maintenance: Drivers may come with the OS, be supplied by hardware vendors, or be downloaded from official repositories. Keeping drivers up to date improves performance and security and can fix compatibility issues. Rebooting is sometimes required; unsigned or untrusted drivers pose risks.

Etymology and usage: In South Slavic languages, drajver is the standard term for the software driver, while the everyday term for a person who drives a vehicle is vozač (or similar).
