drainboard

A drainboard is a kitchen accessory designed to hold recently washed dishes and utensils while water drains away. It is typically placed adjacent to a sink, forming a drying area separate from countertops. Drainboards can be freestanding or integrated with a sink as part of a single unit.

Most drainboards provide a flat or gently sloped surface with raised ridges or grooves to elevate items and promote air drying. They often include a water trough or channel to collect drips and direct water back into the sink. The edge and lip help contain splashes, and some versions have a curved or built-in spout to guide water toward drainage.

Materials vary widely. Stainless steel is common for durability and hygiene, while plastic, acrylic, or composite materials are used for lighter or lower-cost options. Wooden drainboards are still available for decorative purposes, but may require more maintenance to resist water damage. Some drainboards are designed to pair with specific sinks or to fit around a countertop edge.

Usage and care: keep the drainboard dry when not in use, periodically clean with mild detergent, and avoid abrasive cleaners on metal finishes. Many modern drainboards are dishwasher safe if rated by the manufacturer, but hand washing can extend life in some cases.
