A dovetail joint, known in Norwegian as a dovetailskjøter, is a woodworking joint known for its strength and decorative appearance. It is characterized by a series of interlocking pins and tails that resemble the shape of a dove's tail. This design creates a strong mechanical lock, making it exceptionally resistant to being pulled apart.

The dovetail joint is most commonly used in woodworking for joining pieces at right angles, such as in the construction of drawers, boxes, and cabinet carcasses. Its primary advantage lies in its tensile strength, meaning it can withstand significant pulling forces. This makes it ideal for applications where structural integrity is paramount.

There are several variations of the dovetail joint, including through dovetails, half-blind dovetails, and secret half-blind dovetails. Through dovetails are visible from both sides of the joint. Half-blind dovetails are only visible from one side, often used for drawer fronts where the joint is not meant to be seen from the interior. Secret half-blind dovetails are the most complex, concealing the joint entirely from view on both sides.

Historically, the dovetail joint has been a hallmark of fine craftsmanship.
