It contrasts with Dosta, an adverb meaning “enough” or “quite a lot” that is more broadly used to describe quantity or degree. While Dosta is the more frequent stand-alone expression in casual talk, Dostalo appears in grammatically complete phrases where a neuter subject is implied, as in Dostalo je mnogo vremena, “That much time was enough.”

Etymologically, dostalo is linked to the same linguistic family as Dosta, sharing roots that pertain to reaching a limit or achieving sufficiency. The form is most commonly seen in standard literary and spoken Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian in the neuter singular past participle or predicative role, and it can also be written in Cyrillic as достало in Serbian.
