domænet

Domænet is a Danish term that translates to the domain in English and is used to describe a defined area, scope, or set to which something applies. The form with the definite article, Domænet, often refers to a specific domain in a given context. The word comes from Latin dominium, via French domaine, and has been adapted into Danish with related spellings such as domæne and domænet.

In mathematics and logic, domæne denotes the set of input values for a function or relation. If a function f maps elements from a domæne to a codomain, the domæne specifies where the function can be applied and which inputs are valid.

In computing and on the Internet, domæne is closely associated with domain names and the Domain Name System (DNS). A domæne identifies resources within a hierarchical namespace, such as example.dk. The term top-level domain (topniveau-domæne) refers to the highest level in the domain hierarchy, while subdomains like wiki.example.dk are subdivisions of a larger domæne.

In network security and IT, security and administrative domæner describe separate administrative boundaries and trust boundaries within systems.
