As a passive construction, it shifts the focus from the doer to the result or the item that has undergone the change.

In usage, ditukar describes items, currencies, or information that have been transferred from one form or holder to another. Examples include: “Barang itu telah ditukar” (the item has been exchanged), “Duit itu telah ditukar di bank” (the money has been exchanged at the bank), and “Nilai mata wang telah ditukar mengikuti kadar pertukaran” (the currency value has been exchanged according to the exchange rate). The phraseology often uses bersama or with to indicate what it has been exchanged for, such as “ditukar dengan yang baru.”

Distinctions among related forms are also important. The active counterpart is tukar, as in “saya menukar barang” (I exchange the item). The noun pertukaran refers to the act of exchange or the concept of exchange in general, including exchange rates. Ditukar, by contrast, emphasizes the state after the exchange has occurred, or the item that has already been changed, rather than the agent who performed the action.

In practical terms, ditukar appears in everyday speech and in formal or financial contexts, including retail, banking, and logistics. It is commonly used when the exchanger’s identity is unknown or unimportant, or when the emphasis is on the completion or result of the exchange.
