Definition and calculation: Distanten, denoted D, is defined as D = d / L0, where d is the conventional metric distance between the points (for example, Euclidean distance in 3D space) and L0 is a chosen reference length intrinsic to the problem. The resulting quantity D is dimensionless and nonnegative. In curved or non-Euclidean spaces, d can be the geodesic distance along the appropriate metric.

Choice of L0: The reference length L0 is problem-specific and can be a grid spacing, a typical segment length, or a cosmological scale. Different choices of L0 simply rescale D, but comparisons within the same problem remain meaningful.
