In mathematics, it is sometimes used to describe a field equipped with a discrete topology, or more generally a field defined on a discrete set of points. The exact meaning depends on the context, but both usages share the idea of limiting the underlying space to a finite or countable collection of points rather than a continuous manifold.

Discrete topology interpretation: When a field is given the discrete topology, every subset is open, and every function from the field to any topological space is continuous. The algebraic properties of the field—closure under addition and multiplication, existence of additive and multiplicative identities, inverses, and distributivity—are unchanged by the topology, but topological considerations become trivial. This perspective is mainly of theoretical interest, particularly when analyzing maps between fields or when embedding into larger topological structures.

Lattice or discrete-domain interpretation: In physics and numerical analysis, a discrete field assigns a field value to each point of a lattice or finite set. Such discrete fields approximate continuous fields and appear in lattice field theory, finite difference methods, and computer simulations. Operations are performed pointwise, and derivatives are replaced by finite differences. This usage emphasizes the discretization of space (and sometimes time) rather than a particular topological structure on the field.

Finite fields in computation: In many technical disciplines, the field concept is instantiated on a finite set, such as GF(p) or GF(p^n). These finite fields are central to cryptography, error-correcting codes, and digital signal processing. While not always described as “discrete fields,” they are naturally discrete due to finite cardinality and are a concrete realization of field axioms for computational tasks.
